Despite Dongying — located in East China's Shandong province — being a young city with just over 40 years of development, it's nonetheless rich in cultural heritage.

From ancient traditions to thriving modern creativity, Dongying is widely said to blend its youthful vitality with deep-rooted history.

Local intangible cultural heritage or ICH — various types of art performances and handicrafts — plays a vital role in preserving the city's "old flavors".

Traditional skills like reed weaving, Lyu Opera and the making of the famed Qi Writing Brush have transitioned to symbols of cultural identity.

With 678 ICH projects and 345 recognized inheritors in total, Dongying has turned heritage into a driver of local industry and tourism.

As a result, over 4,000 villagers now work in 114 ICH workshops — and regional specialties like Shikou roast chicken and Lijin pan-fried buns have gained national recognition.

Moreover, heritage sites like the Fangjia Ruins and the Sun Wu Temple add historical depth to the city's profile. Cutting-edge research has even revealed evidence of prehistoric matrilineal societies at the Fangjia site.

To enhance public engagement, Dongying has launched several cultural tourism initiatives and it has designated ICH-themed streets, homestays and restaurants. Interactive museums and community education programs are thought to bring heritage to life for residents and visitors alike.

Through the fusion of innovation and tradition, Dongying is continuing to grow as a culturally vibrant city. In every corner, from bustling kitchens to quiet museum halls, the city's character is being shaped — making it young in age, but rich in soul.
