Early-ripening grapes bring sweet success to farmers in Tai'an, Shandong
In the village of Yuejiazhuang, Tai'an city, early-ripening grapes are now in season. Walking into the greenhouse, clusters of translucent and fragrant grapes hang from the vines.
Grape grower Wei Mingcui skillfully cuts ripe grapes into baskets, saying, "I have four greenhouses of grapes. Right now, the daily harvest exceeds 500 kilograms, and customers visit every day to buy them."
Grape cultivation has a long history in Yuejiazhuang village.
"I have been planting grapes for over 20 years. The Tengren grapes have thick flesh, thin skin, intense fruit aroma, and high sweetness, which has received excellent market feedback," Wei said. The Tengren variety is considered a high-end fruit, commanding a higher wholesale price compared to other varieties, leading to substantial income.
In addition to the variety's advantages, new planting techniques support the early market entry of grapes. Refined management practices, such as scientific thinning and pruning, not only ensure fruit quality but also increase yield. Particularly, the Tengren grapes grown in greenhouses start ripening in early June, allowing staggered market entry to capture a premium price.
In recent years, Yuejiazhuang village has optimized its specialty agricultural product cultivation structure, guiding farmers to introduce grape varieties with different ripening periods. This strategy stabilizes market supply and significantly improves land economic benefits.
As sunlight filters through the greenhouse roof, farmers transport crates of grapes. These plump and round fruits not only symbolize the joy of a bountiful harvest but also serve as the "sweet code" driving rural vitalization, paving a path to prosperity for the local community.
